The highly anticipated new Tata Sierra has finally arrived, poised to challenge segment leaders like the Hyundai Creta. Tata Motors’ designers have masterfully crafted an SUV that is both futuristic and deeply reverent to its iconic 1991 predecessor. The new Sierra instantly stands out with its upright, boxy silhouette, a nod to the original, complemented by a blacked-out front grille, high-set bonnet, and distinctive squared-off wheel arches. Modern elements like sleek LED light bars at the front and rear, super-slim headlamps, flush-fitting door handles, and impressive diamond-cut 19-inch alloys lend it a contemporary edge. Even the blacked-out rear glass panel cleverly mimics the original’s unique curved window. Available in six eye-catching shades, including the serene Munnar Mist and vibrant Andaman Adventure, the Sierra radiates desirability.
Underpinning this striking design is Tata’s innovative All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable (ARGOS) architecture. This versatile platform supports multiple body styles and powertrains, including petrol, diesel, CNG, and hybrid options, with both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. Currently offered as FWD, the Sierra boasts segment-leading dimensions: 4.3m long, 1.8m wide, 1.7m high, and a 2.7m wheelbase, making it the tallest and widest midsize SUV with the longest wheelbase.
Luxurious Interiors and Unparalleled Comfort
Step inside, and the Tata Sierra unveils arguably Tata Motors’ most refined interior to date. The cabin exudes a premium feel, thanks to its modern design, sophisticated blend of colours, materials, and meticulous fit-and-finish. The light-coloured, dual-tone upholstery elevates the ambience, while the thoughtfully designed dashboard, featuring a triple-screen setup in top variants, ensures excellent visibility. The four-spoke steering wheel, shared with the Harrier and Safari, features an illuminated logo, adding a touch of class. Touch-sensitive AC controls further enhance the cabin’s modern appeal.
Practicality is key, with a multi-level centre console offering cup holders, charging ports, a wireless phone charger, and an armrest with storage. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, featuring extendable under-thigh support – a segment-first – and well-judged cushioning. Rear passengers enjoy generous knee and shoulder room for three adults, even with the panoramic sunroof. Amenities include window blinds, dedicated AC vents, USB charging ports, a reclining backrest, and ‘boss mode’ for increased legroom. Safety is prioritized with adjustable head restraints and three-point seatbelts for all rear occupants.
Advanced Features and Comprehensive Safety
The Tata Sierra is packed with features to compete fiercely in its segment. The top-tier Accomplished+ variant offers ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, connected car technology, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and rear sunshades. A standout feature is the superb 12-speaker JBL Black sound system, complete with a subwoofer, dashboard soundbar, Dolby Atmos, and 13 preset sound modes.
The highlight in higher variants is the crisp, high-resolution three-screen setup: a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger screen, all from Samsung OLED. These screens are slick to operate with an intuitive user interface. For safety, the Sierra comes standard with 6 airbags, ESC, traction control, a 360-degree camera, and all-around disc brakes. Its expansive ADAS suite includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control, positioning it for a potential 5-star crash test rating from Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP.
Dynamic Performance: Engine Options Explored
The Sierra offers a choice of three refined engine options. While we didn’t sample the new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated MPFI petrol (106hp/145Nm) with 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT, our experience with the other two was insightful.
- 1.5-litre Direct-Injection Turbo Petrol: This new Hyperion engine, delivering 160hp and 255Nm, is our top pick. Paired with a smooth Aisin 6-speed torque converter automatic, it impresses with exceptional refinement and linear power delivery. Turbo lag is minimal, and the engine responds swiftly to throttle inputs, offering drive modes (City and Sport). It achieves 0-100kph in a swift 10.09 seconds in Sport mode, outperforming some rivals. The automatic gearbox’s seamless shifts and excellent calibration ensure an engaging drive.
- 1.5-litre Diesel: Carried over from the Curvv and Nexon, this unit produces 118hp and 260Nm (manual) or 280Nm (automatic). While refinement isn’t its strongest suit, with some engine noise and vibrations noticeable, it offers long-legged performance ideal for highway cruising. The 6-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and keeps the engine in its optimal powerband. It completes 0-100kph in 12.87 seconds. Both engines benefit from robust all-disc brakes, though the petrol’s pedal travel felt slightly long. Road and tyre noise are areas for potential improvement, especially at higher speeds.
Exceptional Ride Comfort and Handling
True to Tata’s reputation, the Sierra excels in ride and handling. Top-spec variants feature Frequency-Dependent Dampers (FDDs) that deliver a composed and tough ride, adeptly absorbing even severe road imperfections. While there’s a hint of firmness at low speeds, the ride significantly smooths out as speed increases. Its 205mm ground clearance, combined with Normal, Wet, and Rough terrain modes, ensures admirable capability over light off-road trails. Body roll is well-controlled around bends, allowing the Sierra to mask its size and height effectively. The steering is light and predictable, though not overtly communicative, contributing to a fun driving experience, particularly with the turbo-petrol automatic.
Initial Verdict and Pricing for the New Tata Sierra
The new Tata Sierra is a compelling package, successfully blending its legendary heritage with modern innovation. Its striking design, premium and comfortable interiors, extensive feature list, and robust safety suite make it a formidable contender in the competitive midsize SUV segment. The turbo-petrol engine offers impressive performance and refinement, while the diesel caters to long-distance drivers. With competitive pricing starting at Rs 17.99 lakh for the turbo petrol and Rs 12.99 lakh for the diesel (ex-showroom), the Tata Sierra is poised to carve out its own significant niche.
