In a world often dictating rigid career paths, Suman Sukhija, a homemaker from Delhi, has defied expectations, transforming her newfound free time into a phenomenal entrepreneurial success. From a modest 10×10 foot room, and without any prior scientific background, she meticulously cultivated ‘Orange Herb,’ a wellness brand specializing in the world’s most unique mushrooms — Cordyceps militaris. Today, her venture generates an impressive Rs 40 lakh annually, while she simultaneously empowers over 1,000 individuals, particularly women, to pursue financial independence through mushroom cultivation. Her story is a testament to determination, learning, and the transformative power of a single idea.
From Domesticity to Daring Entrepreneurship
Suman Sukhija’s life for decades mirrored that of countless Indian women: family, household duties, and nurturing children. Born in Haryana and raised in Delhi, her routine revolved around supporting her family. However, as her children matured and gained independence, she encountered a quiet void. This unaccustomed stillness sparked a profound realization: her free time needed purpose. “Women must earn not only for money, but to build confidence, dignity and a healthier society,” she asserts. This ethos became the bedrock of her subsequent journey, leading her to explore uncharted territories in the world of unique mushrooms.
Discovering the Power of Cordyceps Militaris
Her quest for a meaningful venture began on YouTube, where she explored various aspects of mushroom farming. While common varieties like button and oyster mushrooms initially caught her eye, a five-day training program in Murthal introduced her to something extraordinary: Cordyceps militaris, also known as ‘Keeda Jadi.’ This rare fungus, revered for its potent medicinal properties — boosting energy, immunity, and stamina — presented a unique opportunity. Unlike traditional agriculture, Cordyceps cultivation required precision and scientific discipline in controlled environments, making it ideal for a small-scale, home-based operation. For Suman, it was a “miracle” she could manage single-handedly, requiring only her commitment to learn and apply herself.
Building a Scientific Sanctuary from Scratch
Fueled by this discovery, Suman embarked on specialized Cordyceps training in Meerut in early 2018. Upon her return, she transformed a 100-square-foot room into a rudimentary laboratory. Despite an initial overinvestment in equipment and a disheartening first crop failure due to contamination, Suman refused to be deterred. “Failure became my teacher,” she recounts. She meticulously adopted strict hygiene protocols, sterilizing every surface and tool, working diligently around a laminar hood. The sight of her first successful 200-250 grams of bright orange Cordyceps was a profound triumph, validating her belief that she could master this intricate science.
Orange Herb: Cultivating Wellness and Growth
Mastering the multi-stage cultivation process, from tissue culture to fruiting, Suman’s operation flourished. By 2020, she expanded her labs from Rohini to a larger 250-square-foot facility in Dwarka, now producing 9-10 kg per cycle, with additional labs bringing total production to 16-20 kg. Her son, Rahul, joined to manage operations, enabling further scaling. Observing the positive health impacts on her customers — improved immunity, energy, and relief from ailments — Suman officially launched ‘Orange Herb’ in 2021. The brand offers FSSAI-compliant Cordyceps tea and capsules, and has expanded into saffron and microgreens, becoming a comprehensive wellness hub.
Empowering a Community Through Education
Suman’s influence extends beyond commerce. Leveraging YouTube, she educates potential customers and aspiring entrepreneurs about Cordyceps benefits and cultivation. This transparency fosters immense trust and loyalty. Since 2019, her two-day training programs have provided hands-on scientific knowledge and mentorship, inspiring individuals like Mukul and Ashish to establish their own successful labs. “When my students succeed, I feel like I have succeeded. Empowering people, especially women, is now my purpose,” she states. Leading a growing team, Suman’s annual Cordyceps sales alone reach Rs 40 lakh, with saffron adding to her impressive turnover.
Suman Sukhija’s journey is a powerful narrative of transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary achievements. Her confidence resonates: “If I could build this from a 10×10 room, anyone can. Women underestimate their power.” Her story serves as a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs, proving that courage, discipline, and a willingness to learn can lead to remarkable success and profound community impact.
