The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several southern states as a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, potentially named ‘Senyar’, within the next 48 hours. The storm, named by the United Arab Emirates, is currently developing near Malaysia and the Strait of Malacca.
The IMD forecasts that the system will initially move west-northwest, strengthening into a depression over the south Andaman Sea within 24 hours. Satellite analysis indicates intense convection in the region, with winds reaching 30 knots and moderate sea conditions.
Rainfall Warnings:
- Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall is expected from November 25-27, with very heavy rainfall on November 24 and November 28-30.
- Kerala and Mahe: Heavy rain is likely between November 24-26.
- Lakshadweep: Heavy showers are predicted for November 24.
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Expect heavy rain on November 25 and 29, and very heavy rain from November 26-28.
- Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam: Heavy rainfall on November 29, followed by very heavy rain on November 30.
Thunderstorms with lightning are also anticipated across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands may experience thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 50 kmph over the next six days.
