An image of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, captured by a Canadian astrophotographer using a budget $500 telescope, has ignited a fervent debate online. The image, showcasing a distinct, sharp-edged structure surrounded by a blue halo, contrasts sharply with NASA’s official imagery, fueling speculation about the comet’s true nature.
The buzz began after NASA’s November 19 webcast, where the agency released images of 3I/ATLAS taken by its advanced space-based assets. However, the visuals from the HiRISE telescope proved underwhelming, leaving stargazers disappointed. Ironically, the image from the low-cost Dwarf 3 telescope became the center of attention.
Paul Craggs, the astrophotographer behind the viral image, presents 3I/ATLAS with a bright core enveloped in a smooth, blue aura. This contrasts starkly with previous images showing the expected cometary tail and antitail.
Social media users have reacted with awe and intrigue, some suggesting the image reveals a structured, ship-like object rather than a typical comet. One X user commented on the image’s clean, sharply illuminated appearance, resembling a ‘glowing stage of a Star Wars lightsaber’. Another user pointed to the ‘ship structure under the glow’.
Skeptics, however, attribute the striking image to excessive post-processing. Critics argue that motion blur and aggressive editing techniques may have distorted the comet’s shape, creating the illusion of sharp edges. They point out that the round stars in the background suggest the telescope tracked the sky, not the comet itself.
Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, known for his unconventional theories, has identified 13 anomalies associated with 3I/ATLAS, suggesting the comet’s behavior defies standard models. He speculates that 3I/ATLAS may be more than just a typical icy space rock.
While the debate continues, the image captured by the budget telescope has undoubtedly revitalized public interest in interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, inviting both wonder and critical examination.
