Introduction: Travel Chaos Grips Delhi Airport
Travel plans have been thrown into disarray as IndiGo, India’s largest airline, grapples with widespread flight cancellations. Specifically, all IndiGo domestic flights scheduled to depart from Delhi have been canceled until midnight, creating chaos and frustration for thousands of passengers.
Unprecedented Cancellations: A Record-Breaking Day
The situation escalated dramatically with a staggering 550 IndiGo flights cancelled across multiple airports, including Delhi, on a single Thursday. This marks the highest number of cancellations ever recorded by IndiGo in a single day, an airline that prides itself on its punctuality.

Conflicting Information Adds to Passenger Woes
Adding to the confusion, conflicting information emerged regarding the duration of the cancellations. While the airport initially announced cancellations until midnight, sources within the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) indicated that flights were only canceled until 3 PM. This discrepancy only serves to heighten the anxiety and uncertainty for already distressed travelers.
Underlying Issues: Pilot Shortage and New Regulations
IndiGo has attributed the disruptions to a misjudgment in pilot availability under new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations. These regulations mandate increased rest periods for pilots, impacting the number of consecutive hours they can be on duty. The cumulative effect has left IndiGo short-staffed and unable to operate its scheduled flights.
IndiGo’s Response and Future Outlook
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has issued an apology to passengers, acknowledging the disruptions and assuring that the airline is working to restore normalcy. The airline has also requested an exemption from the new FDTL rules until February 10, 2026, to allow time to hire additional pilots and crew. However, challenges remain, and a swift resolution is not guaranteed.
