OTP Verification Mandatory for Tatkal Bookings: A New Era of Fair Access

Booking Tatkal tickets in India just got a whole lot fairer! The Indian Railways has implemented a crucial security measure: OTP verification mandatory for Tatkal bookings at railway reservation counters. This move aims to curb misuse of the popular last-minute ticketing service and ensure that genuine passengers have a better chance of securing those highly sought-after seats.

How OTP Verification Enhances Tatkal Booking Security

Previously, securing Tatkal tickets could be a frustrating experience, with unscrupulous agents often exploiting the system. Now, passengers will need to provide a valid mobile number when filling out the reservation form at railway counters. A One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to this number, and the booking will only be confirmed after successful verification. This added layer of security effectively links each booking to a real person, making it significantly harder for fraudulent activities to thrive.

Rolling Out the New OTP System: A Gradual Transition

The OTP-based verification system isn’t entirely new. It began as a pilot project on November 17th, initially covering a select number of routes. Its success prompted an expansion to 52 trains, and the Railway Ministry has confirmed that it will soon be implemented across all remaining trains. This phased approach allows for smooth integration and minimal disruption to the booking process.

Combating Ticketing Fraud: A Multi-Faceted Approach

The introduction of OTP verification mandatory for Tatkal bookings is just one part of a broader strategy to combat ticketing fraud. In July, the Railways introduced Aadhaar-based OTP verification for online Tatkal bookings. Furthermore, since October 1st, only Aadhaar-authenticated users have been allowed to book reserved general tickets during the initial 15 minutes of booking opening on the IRCTC website or app. These measures, collectively, are designed to level the playing field and provide genuine travelers with a more equitable chance to secure confirmed tickets, especially during peak seasons when demand is highest.
